History

Wagga Community Band

The origins of the band lie in the desire of a few members of the Wagga City Rugby Male Choir to extend their musical skills by learning to play an instrument. Dave Mundy, President of the Wagga City Rugby Male Choir, took the notion from an idea to reality by organising rehearsals for anyone interested in making music. A keen group of nine would be players attended the first rehearsal at South Wagga Public School Hall on Wednesday 20th April, 2016.

Following a period of practice without a qualified conductor, the band made its first appearance at the Wagga City Rugby Male Choir’s Christmas in July on Saturday 23rd July, 2016. The performance was the first involvement by Brendan Moore who joined forces with Dave Willis to conduct the band until the end of 2018. Transfers with the military saw Dave and Brendan move on, to be replaced by Shane Gillard at the beginning of 2019. Shane had a short but very successful stint with the band before a move to Melbourne for officer training. Sheree Johansen took up the position of Music Director at the beginning of 2020 and, like Shane, moved on to further training at the end of the year. Ben Fixter was appointed at the beginning of 2021 and continues with the band to this day.

The Wagga Community Band have performed at a variety of functions and venues including combined concerts with the Riverina Concert Band, the Department of Education Riverina Regional Band, Leeton Town Band, Tumut Town Band and the Wagga City Rugby Male Choir. Over the last 4 years, the band has enjoyed consistent success at the Wagga Eisteddfod.

The band are developing into an increasingly capable group of around 30 enthusiastic members. A recent development is the move to form a Beginner’s Band to cater for those who are just starting their musical journey.
